Here is an epic clash
between a self-proclaimed atheist and the man closest to God.
Shaka draws power from wisdom and serenity, while Ikki runs on
pure passion and rage. Despite his baravado, Ikki quickly
realizes none of his attacks work on Shaka, and gets to spend
most of the fight either immobilized or facedown on the ground,
amounting to what is possibly the most riveting staredown in all
of anime. Shaka subjects Ikki to various mental and physical
torture in his attempts to find a way to kill this immortal
Phoenix, but instead awakens Ikki's 7th Sense, climaxing in a
kamikaze back hug.
Yeah, that happened.

Shaka barely broke a sweat
against three ex-Gold Saints. He fended off all their attacks
and ensnared them in his own Tenbu Hourin, ruthlessly severing
their senses one by one as he dared them to cast the forbidden
Athena Exclamation. With no other recourse left to them, the ex-Golds
let loose the Athena Exclamation, annihilating everything with
the concentrated power of the Big Bang. Shaka recalled his
childhood spent sobbing and asking the Buddha why there is so
much suffering in the world, yet it was only now that he walked
headlong into death that he understood the answer and awoke to
Arayashiki.

Back when Regulus was a
little cub, he watched his father Ilias
die in front of his
eyes, and the face of the man who killed him was seared into his
mind ever since. And so, when Regulus recognized this man as
Rhadamanthys, he opened up a can of whoop-ass like the world has
never seen before. He cast Athena Exclamation, a technique that
requires the Cosmos of three Gold Saints, on his own. And
followed this up with the Zodiac Clamation, a move that
unleashed the most powerful attacks of all twelve Gold Saints at
once. Though this massive release of Cosmo disintegrated his
body, he kept fighting as a ghost. And won.

In this battle of airborne
ships, Aiacos charged his vessel into the Ship of Hope and, in
an act of pure desperation, Sisyphus managed to
intercept it
with his own body. Never had his title as The Shield for the
world been applied so literally before. And as if he didn't have
enough things to worry about, Sisyphus also found himself
protecting the enemy crew from their crazy Captain. Aiacos only
laughed at Sisyphus' soft-heartedness and crashed both ships out
of spite. He then tried to fry the Saint's body from inside out,
but Sisyphus sacrificed his sight to awaken the 8th Sense and
defeat his nemesis.

This fight scores high on
both creepiness and amusement. Creepiness because getting
dropped off at the gateway to the underworld, sapped of all your
strength, and left at the mercy of a madman is very scary.
Deathmask takes time to savor Shiryu's helplessness and rub it
in his face before personally dragging him off to toss into the
caldera of Yomotsu Hirasaka. This is where the amusement part
comes in. Shunrei has been praying for Shiryu all this time, and
when her
loving pink prayer bubbles hit Deathmask, he gets
very annoyed and psychically throws her off a cliff. Thus
Deathmask broke the cardinal rule when fighting a hero: never
kill the girlfriend. As expected, Shiryu gets enraged and all
hell breaks loose. |

Albafica is a sweet,
noble, and valiant Saint who goes far out of his way to protect
Sanctuary. Minos is a sadistic asshole who is just looking for a
pretty puppet to torture. Their first encounter doesn't end
well, to
say the least. Nevertheless, wounded and broken, Albafica
manages to crawl out of his pool of blood and come asking for
more. This time Minos doesn't want to play; says it's a waste of
Albafica's beauty to kill him. But such compliments only hurt
the Saint's pride, making him even more determined to show this
Specter the power of his Cosmo. With the very blood he spilled
so carelessly before.

Who needs Deathmask
anyway? Virgo Shaka can take care of the Cancer temple just fine
from his comfy meditation chair. He replicated the caldera of
Yomotsu Hirasaka - a most cruel sight to show the three undead
Gold Saints newly returned from the underworld. No matter how
far they ran, they only found themselves trapped in the giant
palm of the Buddha, and were soon greeted with more ghastly
illusions. Once Saga caught on to the trick, he fired a blast
from Cancer, over Leo, and into Virgo. Though his temple was
destroyed, Shaka remained unharmed, and countered with a blast
of his own. Meanwhile, Aiolia was standing outside of Leo
wondering why there were death lasers shooting across the sky. |

When Hades pierced
Sisyphus with his own golden arrow, he shattered his self-image
as a Saint. He thought he was strong enough to defend his
convictions, yet he now felt useless and lost, sucked into a
downward spiral of self-loathing that kept him trapped in a
dream coma. In the midst of his pain he lashed out at anything
that reminded him of his guilt, most prominently himself. And when Athena - the very beacon of his identity - came to rescue him,
he tried to sabotage it by turning his armor
Specter black. Only after shooting the person he cared about
most was he jolted out of his nightmare.

It is only fitting that
the Cancer Saints, who wield power over souls, get to take on
Thanatos. Neither Sage nor Manigoldo were strangers to death.
Sage saw his share during the previous Holy War and Manigoldo
grew up surrounded by it. Now, armed with nothing but a few
strips of paper and a whole lotta guts, Master and Student stood
face to face with a god. The sheer terror of being stranded on a
tiny chunk of land drifting through a divine dimension that
crushed mortals into oblivion upon contact was amplified by
Thanatos' merciless mutilation of their bodies. Yet they were
happy to be together in this moment, hopeless as it was, until
Manigoldo sacrificed himself to give Sage a chance for victory. |

As the guardian of the
first Zodiac temple, poor Mu really got ganged up on in this
fight. It didn't help that these undead attackers were all
former comrades, and their leader was his beloved Master,
whose orders he would normally follow without question. This
made for a very awkward situation where Mu wasn't sure what to
do, and his reluctance to act against Shion nearly cost him his
life. But an order to kill Athena? That he couldn't obey. He got
rid of Deathmask and Aphrodite, and tried his best to fight off
Saga, Shura, and Camus, but their combined force was too much
for him. Worse yet, Shion knew all his weaknesses and eventually
paralyzed him using psychokinesis, allowing the three ex-Golds
to pass. |

The first thing that
happened when El Cid got swarmed by four dream gods was him
cleaving his own arm off when Excalibur got deflected.
Oops. They
ran off, but El Cid tirelessly stalked and defeated them one by
one, even
using his blood to his advantage. With three gods down and
one to go, he was horrified to discover that they had fused into
a significantly more powerful quadruple being. Worse yet, he was
weakening from blood-loss and, after expending a huge burst of
Cosmo on a failed attack, could hardly stand or stay alert. It
was then that Sisyphus shot an arrow empowered by Athena, and El
Cid used the last of his strength to slice it into four pieces,
stabbing the four souls embodied in Oneiros. |
