...Doppelganger (mission 17)
Doppelganger Doppelganger works much like Nightmare from the first Devil May Cry: he is invulnerable unless you catch him in the glare of a light beam. There are several windows of light scattered evenly around the arena, but you have to break them open every time. The trick is figuring out how many swings it takes to unleash a light beam, and this changes from weapon to weapon and from difficulty mode to difficulty mode.

Not knowing exactly what to expect the first time I faced him, I decided to go in with Quicksilver style to safely observe his moves. Incidentally, this was also the first time I ever tried Quicksilver and was not aware that it fed off Devil Trigger. I waltzed over to the nearest window, slashed at it till it lit up, turned on Quicksilver and... waited. Doppelganger didn't move. I waited some more. Quicksilver flickered out an instant before the light did. Devil Trigger was gone. In the split second it took me to say "huh?" Doppelganger was on me like a rabid wolf. And there I was, scrambling around in the dark, clawing frantically at the walls as a creepy black shadow beat me senseless. In a pitch black dimensional warp, no one can hear you scream... o.o;;

But really, Doppelganger is one of the easiest bosses. He is very predictable once you get to know him and it does not take much to trick him into the light. The first thing you need to figure out is how many swings of your weapon of choice it takes to break one of the windows. Once you have that figured out, attack the window and hold off on the last hit until Doppelganger dashes within range, then break the seal and catch him in the glare. Make sure to aim at the window
when you do this, because Dante will often slash at Doppelganger by default. If you see Doppelganger charging you before you get to the appropriate number of strikes, simply jump over him. But even when you have him paralyzed in this way, he only sticks around for a couple of seconds before darting away, making the process safe but very tedious.

A much more efficient way of taking out Doppelganger is to run in a circle breaking open all the windows at once to flood the whole room with light. He will then writhe about helplessly for a good amount of time, and takes a ton more damage from your attacks. This can be hard to do, because the windows don't stay open for long and Doppelganger has a tendency of casting Globe of Darkness to close them. You can keep running circles until you eventually break all the windows anyway, or you can repeatedly bat it away until it backfires and damages him. After being caught in your trap for the allotted amount of time, Doppelganger casts Darkness Explosion to bring the room back to normal and you have to start over.

Black Geyser: the ground under Dante swells with blackness until it explodes upwards and damages you. Move out of its range.

Globe of Darkness:
Doppelganger casts a black orb and shoots it at an open window in order to seal it again. You can deflect this attack with a well timed swipe of your own weapon and bat it between you and the Doppelganger until it backfires on him.

Darkness Explosion:
after being caught in the glare of a fully lit room, Doppelganger will strike at the ground and send waves of blackness to seal up all the windows and restore darkness. Don't stand near him or you will be damaged.
