...Sparda
The demon world
has always existed alongside the human world. But when
the ruler of Hell, Mundus, decided his dominion should extend
into the realm of light, and sent his demonic legions
to subjugate mortals, one of his greatest soldiers
turned against him in the defense of humanity. This
warrior fought back Hell's armies and defeated Mundus. He escaped to Earth through an interplanar
gateway and sealed it shut for centuries using his
sword, his own demon blood, and the blood of a pure
priestess. The humans welcomed their savior, who came
to be known as the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda and
ruled over the mortal world in secret for centuries
until he died.

...Eva
During his
stay on Earth, Sparda met a beautiful blond woman
named Eva. They fell in love and begot identical
half-demon brothers named Dante and Vergil who
couldn't be more different from each other in spirit.
After Sparda died, Eva looked after the children, but it was only a matter of time before
her lover's past
caught up with them. Vengeful demons eager to get back
at Sparda stormed their home and tore Eva to pieces in
front of Dante's eyes - or while he was hidden away by
Eva, depending on what version you go by. One way or
another, the twins were left to fend for themselves
and chose drastically different paths.

...Vergil
Dante's
half-demon older brother. He was closer to his father
Sparda, and always resented Dante because he felt
their mother loved him more. Dante thought Vergil dead
for a long time, but his brother tracked him down in
the guise of a bandaged man named Gilver. After being
defeated, he returned openly as Vergil in an attempt
to unseal the gateway to the demonic world and claim
his father's power. When that didn't work out as
planned and he lost a battle with Mundus, the ruler of Hell, Vergil resurfaced as the brainwashed Nelo
Angelo. He is presumed dead after being defeated by
Dante yet again.

...Dante
The younger
twin. Dante was
very close to his mother, so her tragic death left a
big impact on him. Unable to deal with such a loss, he
repressed most of his past and came to call himself
Tony Redgrave. Tony worked as an elite mercenary, choosing jobs
not based on money but on danger, until a series of
demonic encounters jogged his memory and forced him to
come to terms with his heritage. He used his extensive
experience as a bounty hunter to start his own devil
hunting business. Dante figured that if he took care
of every demon problem that came along, it was only a
matter of time before he would find the ones
responsible for Eva's death and pay them back in kind.
