Dante
and his twin brother Vergil can be seen as two sides
of the same coin, two aspects of the same person, the
conflicted soul of Sparda split in two. The age-old
conflict between the demon world and the human world
played out through bitter sibling rivalry.

He's pretty, he's mature, he's intelligent... he's
fast, deadly, angsty, and cold. Vergil is a perfect
example of the type of focus I latch onto by default.
The impenetrable Ice King who reveals his true self
only to a select few. He wears blue, my favorite
color, and his coat is the most beautiful I have ever
seen. He wields my favorite weapon, the katana. He
embodies all the qualities I admire. How I ended up
liking Dante more is still a mystery to me. It defies
all logic.
...Disciplined
Unlike
Dante, Vergil is very disciplined both as a fighter
and as a person. He likes being in control of others,
but more importantly of himself. He chooses not to
waste his skill on just any weapon that comes along
begging for him to be its master. No, Vergil prefers
to focus his talents on perfecting his Yamato katana
and the Force Edge longsword of legendary power. Both
of these are his father's swords. Indeed, Vergil very
much idolizes his father Sparda. His demonic
strength, his sense of honor, his indomitable
nature... everything
| |
except his compassion towards
humans. Vergil sees himself as the rightful heir to
his father's legacy and strives to keep himself
dignified enough to play the part.
...Ruthless
Vergil
despises his human half and works to be rid of
everything that betrays his mortal blood. His emotions are
perhaps his greatest enemy. They threaten his dominion
over himself and are a crippling weakness in a world
where might makes right. Though he may put on
a mask
of absolute calm, he struggles with his feelings all
the time. He will go to great lengths to confront
their source and prove to himself that it can't sway
his judgment - usually by destroying it. It can be
speculated that this is the main reason he fights his
own brother - his last remaining tie to the human world. Anyone
who doesn't fit Vergil's ideal of cold logic
annoys the crap out of him and is due for
disembowelment.
...Powerful
Though I
consider Vergil more powerful than Dante, Dante wins
more through the suicidal recklessness of a man with
nothing to lose. While Vergil fights with disciplined
raw power, Dante puts his heart and soul into a fight.
But no matter how much power Vergil has, he always
seeks more. The acquisition of more power and the
actualization of his demonic potential seems to
justify his existence, and he is prepared to do
anything to achieve his goal. Consequences like the
Earth being thrust into Hell in the process mean
little to Vergil, and indeed bolster his belief that
the weak shall fall before the strong. Perhaps this is his
way of dealing with his mother's death, except that
instead of Dante's protective reaction, his was the
realization that depending on humanity is futile.

...Nelo
Angelo
Vergil
first appeared in Devil May Cry as a demonic dark
knight who challenges Dante in the famous mirror scene
in the bedroom. After an intense battle, the
mysterious knight gets the upper hand and is
strangling Dante against a wall when their mother's
amulet spills from under Dante's clothes. Nelo Angelo
then freaks out and flies away. Dante faces him once
again and emerges victorious, but Nelo turns into a
purple flame, zips away, and explodes into
electricity. In the third fight it is revealed that he
is none other than Dante's twin brother Vergil. When
he is defeated, he blinks out of sight in a surge of
purple flame exactly the same way he did last time,
except for some bizarre reason everybody assumed he
was dead. Probably because he dropped his half of the
amulet. Anyway, it is 99%
|
certain that Vergil will be
back in Devil May Cry 4. In Vergil's special ending of
Devil May Cry 3, it is revealed that the reason he
became Nelo Angelo in the first place was because he
tried fighting the Dark Emperor Mundus while still
nursing grievous wounds from his final encounter with
Dante. He was presumably defeated and brainwashed.
...Dante x
Vergil
With few humanoid
characters to choose from and considering that Dante's
leading ladies change from game to game, a lot of fans
have settled for pairing the two brothers as a
romantic focus. Known as "twinscest," I
doubt that many people get turned on by the fact that
they're related. The point here is that they're
obscenely pretty and have beautifully contrasting
personalities. And besides, it's not like they can
have mutant children or anything. Yes, they're typically out to kill each
other, but we all know that's simply because they're
in denial and battle is the only release they have for
such intense emotions. ^_^;; Well, that is,
until they figure out... other... ways of expressing
their feelings, and there are plenty of fanart and
fanfics that offer creative solutions to this problem.

...Vergil's
Fighting Words
Vergil's
voice in Devil May Cry 3 (Dan
Southworth) is to die
for. And by that I mean its sexiness is highly
distracting during battle! Here's a list of all the
quotes I could come up with. Perhaps knowing them in
advance will help you resist the siren's call. Doubt
it, though... *_*
"Don't
get so cocky."
"This may be fun."
"Where's your motivation?"
"Now I'm motivated!"
"You will not forget this devil's power."
"You're not worthy as my opponent."
"You're going down!"
"Scum!"
"Cut off!"
"Blast!"
"Be gone!"
"Die!"
"Rest in peace."
